SoCal Sound: The Growlers

Left to right: Scott Montoya (drums), Matt Taylor (guitar), Brooks Nielsen (vocals), Anthony Braun Perry (bass), Kyle Straka (guitar/keys)

This quintet call the OC their home, namely Dana Point, where a great deal of their music is inspired from. Making music since 2006, their surf rock guitar sound mixed with an experimentally DIY attitude creates an indescribable blend they have coined “Beach Goth.” These boys obviously have a few key things on the brain: surfing, psychedelia, and music.

I am in love with this band. And when I say love, I actually mean obsessive passionate love. I’ve had to limit my listening; I am terrified of getting tired of it… but I honestly don’t think I can or will.

These lo-fi pioneers have redefined what it means to be “hip” and in this new wave of 60’s resurgence, reminded music lovers that the industry is not about who has the best equipment or best producer, but truly just about the pure, unadulterated sound. Their sound comes from aged, classic instruments and equipment, and they very much don’t prefer the studio setting for recording. They trashed an album they created with incredible the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach since they thought their new album was headed in the radio direction. What they crave is making music with actual creativity and ingenuity. The Growlers have built their success with their own bare hands and warped minds.

Their tracks are laced with heavy vocal effects on the lead singer Brooks Nielsen’s Morrison-like drone (and I mean that in a good way), trippy organ sounds, groovy bass lines courtesy of Anstonio69, and an overall feel that takes you back in time to the simpler, marijuana-fueled 60’s existence.

If you get the chance, check these kids out live. Here are their current tour dates:
