Foxygen - "Oh Yeah"
Foxygen broke out this year with their ridiculously named, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic. The idea of Foxygen is as pleasant as rock band upbringings go. Two kids meet in high school, get inspired by oldies, mess around, then make it big--or at least semi "big" . On We Are…, what we get on is nothing but blissful nostalgia and testaments to names such as The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and even some influences from Lennon's half of the Beatles. On "Oh Yeah", the similarities to Mick Jagger are impossible to ignore, but Foxygen is successful in creating a refreshing track free of any corruptive electronic influences. Bands that extract from the past are very vulnerable to musical kleptomania, but in these recent years (Girls) we have seen it been done with respect and intuition. What is especially rewarding about Foxygen's prevalent influences is that it doesn't seem like they steal the music of our past generation, it is almost as if they are actually from that distant period. In a world of electronic producers and effect ridden vocals, Foxygen stands out as a band not trying too hard, but still able in their songwriting and instrumentations.
